दुर्दैवी अंत: अत्यंत प्रतिकूल हवामान आणि प्रवासातील दगदगीमुळे त्यांना अमेरिकेतच क्षयरोगाची (Tuberculosis) लागण झाली होती. कोल्हापुरात प्रत्यक्ष पदभार स्वीकारण्यापूर्वीच वयाच्या अवघ्या २१ व्या वर्षी २६ फेब्रुवारी १८८७ रोजी पुण्यात त्यांचे दुःखद निधन झाले.
