German meteorologist and geophysicist Alfred Wegener postulated the Continental Drift Theory in 1912. He hypothesized that all modern landmasses were once conjoined in a single supercontinent called Pangaea, encircled by a global superocean called Panthalassa.
Wegener marshaled empirical evidence including the 'jig-saw fit' of Atlantic coastlines, identical fossil records (*Glossopteris* and *Mesosaurus*), and Permo-Carboniferous glacial tillites across distant continents.
